Open ship Johan de Witt

Zr.Ms. Johan de Witt is one of two amphibious transport ships owned by the Royal Navy and are called Landing Platform Docks (LPDs). A tour on this magnificent vessel is a true experience.

Amphibious transport ships are capable of transporting and landing (debarking) an entire battalion of 610 Marines, including supplies for 10 days. LPDs are also used in crisis management operations, natural disasters and evacuations. Two helicopters can land on the (helicopter) deck.

No port needed
If there is no port and personnel and goods need to come ashore, the rear of the ship can open and lower up to 4 meters. This allows water to flow into the internal dock and the LPD's carried landing craft can sail out.

Operating tables
An LPD is self-sufficient for a month without difficulty. The ship also has a desalination plant that can make drinking water from salty seawater. LPDs also have operating tables, intensive care beds, treatment rooms and an emergency hospital for 100 patients.

The tour
Open ship on the Johan de Witt is more than a tour. It is a tour of just under an hour that starts in the belly of the ship and ends on the 28 meter high side deck from where you have a magnificent view of Amsterdam. Along the way, you will encounter everything that makes this vessel so incredibly fascinating and men will be on hand to tell you about it. Never before has it been possible for the public to see the Zr.Ms. Johan de Witt up close in Amsterdam. This is only possible during Seaport Days.

Accessibility
The Zr. Ms. Johan de Witt is part of Havenexperience De Terminal and only accessible through the main entrance of the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam. Visitors with an (online) entrance ticket for the open ship will receive the coveted Zeehavendagen keycord for free upon entry. Due to the expected crowds, we advise visitors to come to the Havenexperience by public transport, bicycle and on foot.
