Interested in Amsterdam's rich shipping history? Then do the maritime city walk with guide Adrie Doorneveld during the Seaport Days.

On Saturday, June 29 and Sunday, June 30, fascinating maritime walks will be organized across Amsterdam's Eastern Islands.

Amsterdam, situated on the Amstel and IJ rivers, has always had a close connection to shipping. From building ships in the shipyards to the development of the Admiralty and the Navy, and from the heyday of the United East India Company to the modern Dutch Shipbuilding Company. Most of these activities took place in just a few square miles in the eastern part of the city.

Museum 't Kromhout
We explore the history of the Kromhout Wharf, unravel why the Marineterrein was always closed, and see what line tracks are. We look for the origin of the names Kattenburg and Wittenburg, and discover who was the architect of 's Lands Zeemagazijn. We investigate whether the Markerhuisje on Wittenburg is related to the former island of Marken, and dive into the history of Oostenburg and the Nederlandsche Scheepsbouw Maatschappij. We study the rise of steamships and the Vemen on the Nieuwe Vaart. What does the Entrepotdok mean and why are there no warehouses with place names beginning with A? What street names recall old shipping occupations? And much more.
