Who else than Hans Bartelsman is able to tell the history, present and future of the Marine Etablissement (MEA) in a captivating way. The former Chief of Staff, also Deputy Commander, of the Marine Etablissement (MEA) spent nearly 39 years of service with the Royal Netherlands Navy in his hometown of Amsterdam. During that time Bartelsman was already giving tours and after his retirement he continued to do so as a guide.

During the one-and-a-half-hour tour of the Marineterrein, various facts and trivia about the area are discussed at various stops. Visually. Because apart from the striking building that now houses Het Scheepvaartmuseum and used to function as 's Lands Magazijn, there is much more to see in the area that will surprise you.

Terrain in transition
Although the Royal Navy is still connected to Amsterdam through the MEA, you will discover during the tour that the terrain is still in transition. Since the so-called "front yard" was transferred to the Project Bureau Marineterrein Amsterdam in 2015, almost three-quarters of the buildings and surrounding plots have been given a different function. Bartelsman is going to tell you more about that.
