Adriaansen visits Damen and connects shore power
Damen Shiprepair Amsterdam killed two birds with one stone this week. First, there was the working visit of Minister Adriaansens of Economic Affairs and Climate. Then inaugurated the new shore power installation for the yard's largest dock by connecting the installation for the first time.
The opening of the shore power installation was part of the working visit of the Minister of Economic Affairs and Climate and the Envoy Sector Agenda Maritime Manufacturing Industry, Kees van der Staaij. The duo received a tour of the shipyard and were updated on, among other things, the importance of the shipyard for Amsterdam as a port city.
Sustainable future
"We are honored to take this important step in our transition to a sustainable future in the presence of the minister," said Tjeerd Schulting, managing director of Damen Shiprepair Amsterdam. "With the installation we are putting even more effort into sustainability and that fits well with the expectations of our customers. We are also making great strides in this with, among other things, making ships more sustainable."
Dock conversion
Since last year, a lot of hard work has been done to be able to use the mobile installation for seagoing vessels that are in Damen Shiprepair Amsterdam's largest dry dock for repair, maintenance or conversion. As a result, ships no longer have to use their own diesel generators to generate power, but this comes from the quieter and "greener" shore power installation.
Mobile container
The installation consists of a newly constructed electrical grid and a mobile container containing a frequency converter. This provides connection options of 690, 440 or 400 volts and a frequency of 50 or 60 Hz. The mobile container gives the possibility of installing the connection at any location around the dock, and depending on the needs of the ship.
