HES Bulk Terminal and EMC Cement together in sustainable cement production

Bulk terminal HES and EMC Cement (EMC) will jointly develop an electric cement plant. Making conventional cement requires a lot of energy and emits a lot of CO2. The cement from this plant will be much more sustainable.

Bulk terminal HES gets electric cement plant

The new process provides energy savings of 90 percent and emits 1 million fewer tons of CO2 per year compared to conventional production methods. The cement plant is expected to be in operation in late 2025/early 2026. The plant will be located on the site of HES Bulk Terminal Amsterdam. HES and EMC signed a letter of intent for this (see photo).

Production Process

HES' press release further explains the process. It also plans to incorporate secondary streams from concrete recycling. The application of EMC Volcanics reduces CO₂ emissions as agreed in the concrete agreement. In this agreement it was agreed to accelerate the sustainability of the concrete sector with the aim of having a CO₂-neutral and circular concrete sector by 2030. The Dutch concrete sector is leading the way with this approach.

Climate neutral port

According to Jeroen van der Neut, COO of HES, the plant fits perfectly with their ambitions for a transition to a sustainable future. From this terminal there is direct access to rail and road, sea and rivers, and national and international reach to markets in Belgium, the United Kingdom, Germany and Scandinavia. Port of Amsterdam is also pleased with this new development. Roon van Maanen, head of Energy and Circular Industry at Port of Amsterdam: "The realization of this plant fits perfectly with our goals for a climate-neutral port."
