The first pile has been struck for Bunge
An important milestone for the province of North Holland: the first pile has been driven for Bunge's new sustainable factory in the Municipality of Zaanstad. This symbolic act marks a crucial step in the transition to a sustainable industry in the region, with Wormerveer making way for Hoogtij.
The first pile was struck by (pictured from left to right) Arthur van Dijk (King's Commissioner), David Vandermeersch (Vice President Europe, Middle East & Africa), Koen Overtoom (CEO Port of Amsterdam), Bart Althuizen (Project Director) and Jan Hamming (Mayor of Zaanstad Municipality).
Transition from Wormerveer to HoogTij
Bunge's new plant (Loders Croklaan) will replace the Maasvlakte refinery in Rotterdam and the current Bunge plant in Wormerveer will also move to this new location. The plant is expected to be operational in the summer of 2025.
Towards a sustainable and circular economy
The new factory will be built according to the latest technological standards, resulting in a highly efficient and sustainable factory. For example, Bunge aims to achieve direct energy savings of 40 percent and CO2 reductions of 90 percent by 2030. The project demonstrates a shared commitment to embrace environmentally friendly practices and transform the industry. Bunge, North Holland Province and Port of Amsterdam are joining forces to facilitate this transition to ensure a sustainable future for the region.
With the new plant, Bunge is able to offer a broader and more innovative product portfolio of sustainable vegetable oils and fats that is better suited to future market demand. We are delighted with the establishment of this factory in the port area. Koen Overtoom, CEO Port of Amsterdam: 'The historically strong food cluster in the North Sea Canal area will be further expanded and made more sustainable with this new factory. As a port, we are strengthening our position in agri-products and cargo. This is important for the region and the port. We are therefore pleased with the arrival of this factory and Bunge's commitment to a deforestation-free and sustainable supply chain.'
