Port engineers of the future start at TASC

TASC (Tech Amsterdam Scholen Collectief) Amsterdam - the first technical VMBO school in Amsterdam - is opening its doors to the first "batch" of students with an affinity for technology. The high school will start at a temporary location in Amsterdam Zuid-Oost. There it will train the technicians of the future. Also for the port, which is going to help.

All of the Netherlands is crying out for technically trained personnel. The shortages are palpable and every initiative to train (young) people or at all to enthuse them for a future in technology is widely embraced. The business community in the Amsterdam port is also experiencing personnel shortages. Technical profiles as well as employees with a logistics background are in demand. And all the more so in view of the energy transition. For this, the port really needs bright minds. However, recruiting these prospects for a job at the port is still a tough job. For many potential employees, the 'port seed' is not planted at a young age, so they tend to opt for another sector. Time to change that.

7 worlds of technology
TASC is a VMBO school that offers special technical subjects in addition to regular subjects to prepare students for a career in engineering. Thus, the old LTS or craft school is once again making its appearance in the world of education anno 2023. The students of the new technical school learn by doing and working with real-life projects of real companies located in the 7 worlds of engineering. The port is located in two worlds: The world of design, manufacturing and global trade and the world of energy, water and & safety. Companies can provide guest lessons, internships or field trips within the theme so that students are directly introduced to the field.

Flow-through MBO

An important development within the school is the transition to a technical MBO education. To this end, TASC and Techcampus Amsterdam - an organization that provides students with a technical experience - are developing a continuous learning line in cooperation with MBO College Westpoort (ROC van Amsterdam) and the Wood and Furnishing College, among others. Pupils from TASC are guided to further education in the best possible way. And here too, the business community plays an important role. From a guest lesson or school trip to a work placement, to eventually a potential employee. A route desirable for the student, the school and the company.

Working in the Port
Seeking affiliation with both technical and logistics training is proving to be quite important for the port sector. Before potential employees can start working in the port, they must first be enthused. By giving 'port lessons' early in the course and matching theory with practice, you hope to broaden the student's horizons. A handful of students know how to find the port and that is not enough.

Polish
Time to step up as a port business community toward education. So a number of companies from the port area are joining forces with TASC and the ROC of Amsterdam. They are going to take students to the Amsterdam port in the coming period. They will tell them about the activities and offer taster internships - or in the case of MBO students - work placements. So don't bullshit but clean!
