NPRC invests in making fleet more sustainable

NPRC will invest 3 million euros in making its fleet more sustainable. The organization calls it a collective step forward by 150 united entrepreneurs to reduce emissions from the fleet and in the chain. Never before has an effort been made to make dry bulk inland shipping more sustainable on such a scale. NPRC is the largest cooperative of inland shipping entrepreneurs in Europe.

NPRC CEO Femke Brenninkmeijer: 'Making the logistics sector more sustainable is a must. We see that sustainability is now on all administrative and strategic agendas. This is a very important theme for ourselves but certainly also for our customers. We want to take the lead in this as a collective.'

Step by step
With 3 million in the pot, NPRC offers members the opportunity to invest themselves in sustainability, specifically in reducing CO2 and nitrogen emissions. At the same time, NPRC as a whole contributes concretely to a broad development in society and industry to reduce the CO2 and nitrogen footprint. Brenninkmeijer: "In close cooperation between the customer, cooperative employees, and the individual inland shipping entrepreneur, the goal is to step by step reduce NPRC's CO2 and nitrogen emissions by 20% by 2025 compared to 2022. In this way, we will achieve a substantial improvement in emissions in the chain.'

Sailing on bio-fuel
NPRC calls waterborne transportation a sustainable way to set up the supply chain and save on CO2 emissions anyway, but more is possible and needed. 'We were already doing a lot in this area,' says Brenninkmeijer. 'From sailing on biofuel to hydrogen. The WeVa project (Waterstof Elektrisch Vrachtschip Antonie) with the first new-build hydrogen ship built by our member Harm Lenten is a great example.'

Partners make stronger
Meanwhile, NPRC's initiative is being strengthened by a number of strategic partners. Suppliers of technology offering exclusive discounts and financing agencies that have created attractive "green" terms for NPRC members are encouraging the cooperative in its strategy.
