Signing incentive program Working at the port

For at least three years, the Amsterdam port industry will collectively spotlight vacancies and proactively work on its image. This is necessary to combat the increasing aging of the sector and attract talent. In addition, the port wants to show its innovative character and present itself as an ideal employer that pays well.

Representatives from the port business community, Port of Amsterdam and the City of Amsterdam - including Alderman Rutger Groot-Wassink (Alderman for Work and Director National Program Together New-West) and Koen Overtoom (CEO Port of Amsterdam) - met today to sign the Stimuleringsprogramma Werken in de haven (2024-2026). This plan sets out the means the port is deploying to get in the picture of job seekers and how the sector plans to get the necessary flow of potential workers going. Part of the initiative is an extensive labor market campaign unique to the port of Amsterdam. In addition to promotion, making the match between job seekers and the port industry is part of the program.

Well-paid jobs
The ports of Amsterdam - to which Zaanstad, Velsen-IJmuiden and Beverwijk also belong - offer plenty of opportunities to young people and lateral entrants. (Entry-level) jobs at the practical, intermediate vocational and higher vocational levels. Well-paid logistics, technical and maritime work and in terms of location close to where they live. The port is looking for personnel on all fronts. A trend that according to the port business community will increase in the coming years because of, among other things, the number of new jobs resulting from the energy transition and the outflow of pensioners.

Matching path
The incentive plan is aimed at optimizing the matching process between job seekers and the port business community, connecting education and training in practice and creating as many contact moments as possible. The aforementioned labor market campaign (Werkenindehaven.amsterdam) is part of the program and contributes to recruiting workers and improving the image of the port. The budget for the next three years was raised by the port business community, Amports, ORAM, Port of Amsterdam and the National Program Together New West.

New West district
The Stimulation Program Working in the Port has a district-oriented approach for Amsterdam. Linking up with the National Program Together New West, the promotion of the port industry is primarily aimed at young people and those entering the port from the New West district. Activities will be developed in the district, harbor tours planned, teaching packages developed and a youth event organized during Amsterdam Seaport Days. For the target group convinced of a future in the port, a short (renewed) matching process will prepare them for a job in the port. The ambition is to get other districts to join the program as well.

Initiators of the program are Entrepreneurs Association ORAM, Amports and Port of Amsterdam. Supported by the National Program Together Nieuw-West (Municipality of Amsterdam) and port and port-related companies such as AEB Amsterdam, Bontrup, Braspenning, C.Steinweg-Handelsveem B.V., Damen Shiprepair Amsterdam, Eurotank Amsterdam, Feadship, HES Terminal Amsterdam and TMA Logistics.
